Kathy Freeman was raised in Vancouver, B.C. and has been sculpting since high school, where she was inspired by the skills of her Art Teachers. Kathy later received training through the Vancouver Community Collegeʼs "Sculpt 2000" Program, run by the accomplished Artist, "Mr. Jean-Guy Dallaire". Through him, she came to admire the works of the masters, in particular, those of Henry Moore. Kathy married Selkirk born "Olde Tyme Photographer", George Freeman, and relocated to the area with him 12 years ago.
Kathy has always seen shapes "inside" of rocks and other objects, and pictures in the details of wallpaper, linoleum, paint spatter, and any other random patterns. She believes that when working with stone, her best pieces are accomplished when she "sees" what is in the rock and "lets it out".
Kathy enjoys carving carefree animals when working with stone, and works more abstractly in other materials such as her foam & wax models. These are ready to be sent to the foundry & cast in bronze, or finished with a bronze "Guilderʼs Paste" for a more economical and just as beautiful showpiece.
Kathy has recently taken a welding course through LSSD Continuing Education, (taught by Mr. Dave Ireland). She is now interested in spending a few years exploring different techniques for sculpting in steel. She has always felt that her abstract pieces were only small models, meant to be guides for the making of large outdoor sculptural installations, and working directly in steel and/or other metals could be one way or accomplishing this vision.
As a member of the "Selkirk Community Art Center" Kathy will be the featured artist for the month of March. She will be displaying a wide variety of 20+ sculptures, in many mediums, some of which have been "borrowed back" from private collections. There will be some sculptures available for sale, with the proviso that they may be "borrowed back" for future shows.
